Today in Metal History – October 19th

Today in Metal: 19/10 Twisted Sister, Manowar, Doro, Metallica and More

October 19 has a pretty strong history for metal fans. From Twisted Sister bringing back the spirit of “Stay Hungry” to Manowar, Doro and Wintersun releasing albums on the same day, this date has given us plenty of music to turn up loud.

And that’s only part of the story. Ace Frehley, Soulfly, Jag Panzer and Tad Morose are also on the list, while W.A.S.P., Metallica, Saxon and Darkthrone gave us singles worth remembering.

Let’s take a trip through the years and see what October 19 brought to the metal world.

2000 – Tad Morose Release “Undead”

We begin in 2000 with Swedish progressive power metal band Tad Morose and their album “Undead”. The record opens our October 19 journey with a band known for mixing heavy riffs with a progressive edge. A solid starting point for a day that has plenty of different metal styles waiting ahead.

2004 – Twisted Sister and Jag Panzer Bring the Heavy

October 19, 2004 gave us two very different metal releases.

Twisted Sister returned with “Still Hungry”, a re-recorded version of their classic “Stay Hungry” album. The title itself says it all: the band was ready to revisit the songs that helped make them a household name in heavy metal.

On the same day, American power metal band Jag Panzer released “Casting The Stones”. With its place in the band discography, the album adds another dose of traditional heavy and power metal to the day’s history.

Two releases, two different approaches, but both belong on the playlist today.

2012 – Manowar, Doro and Wintersun Make October 19 Special

If you enjoy variety, 2012 was a big year for this date. Three very different albums arrived on October 19.

Manowar released “The Lord Of Steel”, bringing the band familiar heavy metal name to the day’s lineup. When Manowar is involved, you know which flag is flying: heavy metal.

Doro also released “Raise Your Fist”. The Metal Queen has spent decades keeping the spirit of heavy metal alive and this album carries a title that feels right at home in her world. Raise those fists!

Then there is Wintersun with “Time I”. The Finnish band epic approach gives this date another sound, showing just how many different directions metal can take without losing its power.

Three albums on one day, with Manowar, Doro and Wintersun each bringing their own identity to the table. Which one would you put on first?

2018 – Ace Frehley and Soulfly Take Different Roads

October 19, 2018, brought two more albums into the picture.

Ace Frehley released “Spaceman”, adding another chapter to the solo career of the legendary guitarist known for his work with KISS.

Soulfly released “Ritual” on the same day. With Soulfly in the mix, the day history moves toward a heavier, more aggressive sound.

It’s another reminder that metal has never been just one thing. From classic rock and heavy metal roots to groove-driven heaviness, there is room for different sounds on the same playlist.

Singles Released on October 19

The albums aren’t the only reason to remember this date. October 19 has also seen some notable singles arrive over the years.

1987 – W.A.S.P. “I Don’t Need No Doctor”

W.A.S.P. kicked off this part of the timeline with their single “I Don’t Need No Doctor”. The title alone makes it a fitting addition to a day built for loud music.

1992 – W.A.S.P. “I Am One”

W.A.S.P. returned to the list five years later with “I Am One”. And that wasn’t the only major single released on October 19, 1992.

1992 – Metallica “Wherever I May Roam”

Metallica released “Wherever I May Roam” one of the singles from their self-titled 1991 album, often called “The Black Album”. It’s a track that takes us back to a huge period in the band career and remains a familiar name in their catalog.

2007 – Saxon “I’ve Got to Rock (To Stay Alive)”

Saxon brought another dose of classic heavy metal to October 19 with “I’ve Got to Rock (To Stay Alive)”. Honestly, that title sounds like a motto many metalheads would happily live by.

2022 – Darkthrone “Caravan of Broken Ghosts”

The latest single in our timeline comes from Darkthrone. Released on October 19, 2022 “Caravan of Broken Ghosts” adds a darker note to the day history and closes our journey with a different shade of metal.

Legends We Lost – Glen Buxton (Alice Cooper)

October 19 is also a day to remember Glen Buxton, the original lead guitarist of Alice Cooper. Born on November 10, 1947, Glen helped shape the band early sound with his guitar work and became part of the story behind one of rock most iconic acts. He died on October 19, 1997, at the age of 49. His riffs remain part of Alice Cooper legacy and his contribution to the band early years deserves to be remembered. Gone, but never forgotten.

What Are You Playing Today?

From Tad Morose in 2000 to Darkthrone in 2022, October 19 has delivered power metal, traditional heavy metal, progressive sounds, groove metal and more.

Twisted Sister revisited “Stay Hungry”. Manowar and Doro brought their names to the same release date as Wintersun. Ace Frehley and Soulfly shared a release day in 2018. And Metallica, W.A.S.P., Saxon and Darkthrone added their own chapters through singles.

That’s a lot of metal history for one date.

Which October 19 release is going on your playlist today? Are you reaching for Twisted Sister, raising your fist with Doro, going epic with Wintersun or turning it up with Metallica? Let us know and keep the metal alive! 🤘
