Powerslave, Iron Maiden’s fifth studio album, arrived on the music world on September 3, 1984. In order to guarantee that audiences would be enthralled with this masterpiece’s ageless strength and brilliance for years to come, it was subsequently reintroduced to fans in 2002.
The Ancient Egypt concept on the CD cover art enhances the whole experience. The album’s title track was the centrepiece of the enthralling World Slavery Tour. This was the band’s longest and most gruelling tour, which began on August 9, 1984 in Warsaw, Poland. The thrilling live CD Live After Death is the product of that voyage.
Iron Maiden’s album includes a musical version of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, incorporating lines from the poem into the lyrics. The track, lasting 13 minutes and 45 seconds, held the band’s record for longest song for over three decades, until it was surpassed by the 18-minute “Empire of the Clouds” from their 2015 album “The Book of Souls“.
Notably, “Powerslave” is the band’s first album with the same lineup as their last studio album. This cast would play two more studio albums together. Until “Senjutsu” (2021), it is also their only album to date to have an instrumental song, and the only one on which guitarist and veteran member Dave Murray does not receive authorship credit.
The singles “Aces High” and “2 Minutes to Midnight” were released.
