Interestingly, the song began life as an early demo called “Death Kiss”, giving fans a fascinating glimpse into how the track evolved.
“The Oath”

“The Oath” is everything Mercyful Fate did brilliantly: atmosphere, drama, melody and aggression packed into one unforgettable track.
King Diamond sounds completely possessed, moving effortlessly between lower-register passages and his famous high-pitched screams.

“Desecration of Souls”

The Rest of the Oath
Of course, choosing only five tracks from “Don’t Break the Oath” doesn’t tell the whole story.
“Gypsy”, “Welcome Princess of Hell”, “To One Far Away”, “Desecration of Souls” and “Nightmare” all contribute to the album unique identity.
And that’s the thing about “Don’t Break the Oath”: it doesn’t depend on one massive hit.
The entire record feels like one dark, carefully constructed piece.
The guitars are constantly moving. The riffs refuse to settle into predictable patterns. King Diamond turns every vocal line into part of the atmosphere.
And the production still has that wonderfully raw 1980s character.
