From the shadows of the Italian Riviera comes Azrael a band proving that classic heavy metal still has plenty to say in 2026. Originally formed back in 1988 in Rapallo the group disappeared for years before returning with a renewed lineup led by founding guitarist Andy Lijoi. Their comeback release “Clockwork Abyss” feels less like a nostalgic reunion and more like unfinished business finally brought to life.
The five-track EP was written, recorded and produced entirely by the band, giving it an honest and organic sound that many modern metal releases often miss. Fans of Savatage and Queensrÿche will immediately recognize the atmosphere Azrael builds melodic riffs. Emotional vocals and cinematic storytelling wrapped in classic heavy metal energy.
Leading the charge is “Chinatown” a track soaked in late-’80s American crime-film mood. It carries the neon-lit tension of a forgotten thriller soundtrack while keeping the heart of traditional heavy metal alive. There’s also a strong melodic hard rock edge hidden beneath the darker atmosphere, with flashes reminiscent of Whitesnake during their late 80s peak.
What makes Azrael interesting is their honesty. The band isn’t trying to reinvent heavy metal or chase trends. Instead they embrace the roots of the genre and reshape familiar influences into something personal and sincere. “Clockwork Abyss” sounds like the kind of record made by musicians who genuinely love the music they grew up with and that passion comes through in every track.
For fans searching for melodic heavy metal with atmosphere. Heart and a touch of old-school cinematic charm, Azrael is a band worth discovering.
