Kreator - Coma of Souls

Album Review: Kreator – Coma of Souls (1990)

History:

“Coma of Souls” is the fifth studio album by German thrash metal band Kreator, released in 1990. By this time, Kreator had already cemented their place as one of the leading forces in the thrash metal scene, particularly in Europe. Known for their aggressive, fast-paced sound “Coma of Souls” saw the band refining their musical style. While still rooted in thrash the album also showed a more melodic side, with intricate guitar work and sharper production. Produced by Randy Burns, the album was well-received by fans and critics alike, solidifying Kreator position as one of the premier thrash metal bands of the time.

Artwork:

The artwork on the album cover by Andreas Marschall well reflects the intensity of Kreator music. It has a cybernetic figure with wires coming out of its head which stands for society mechanisation and loss of individuality. This dystopian imagery resonates with the album’s themes of political unrest, societal decay, and existential dread, mirroring the chaotic and aggressive tone of the music.

Notable Tracks:

  • “When the Sun Burns Red” – The album’s opening track sets the tone with a melodic introduction before exploding into thrashing riffs and Mille Petrozza signature snarling vocals. The song addresses environmental destruction and societal collapse, topics that remain relevant to this day.
  • “People of the Lie” – A standout track both musically and lyrically, it’s an anthem of defiance against corrupt leaders and dishonest systems. The mid-tempo groove and razor-sharp guitar work give it a crushing, memorable impact.
  • “Coma of Souls” – The title track is a thrash metal assault, with blistering speed and technical precision. Its lyrics delve into the loss of identity and the dehumanization of modern life, making it one of the album’s most thematically powerful songs.

Why It’s Iconic:

“Coma of Souls” is one of Kreator most important albums. The album shows the band increasing skill with sophisticated guitar solos and subtle song structures, while also capturing their raw aggressiveness. Their music had a constant intensity, but the lyrical substance, which frequently addressed political and social themes, gave it depth. The album theme of forward thinking and extreme energy make it a classic of the thrash metal genre.

Kreator - Coma of Souls

  • Kreator recorded the album in Los Angeles, which at the time was unusual for a European thrash band and showed the band expanding global appeal.
  • The group built their reputation as a strong live act by touring the globe in promotion of the record.
