Dio - The Last in Line

Album Review: Dio – The Last in Line (1984)

After the massive impact of “Holy Diver” Dio returned in 1984 with “The Last in Line”. An album that proved the band wasn’t a one-album wonder. Bigger, sharper and more polished, it cemented Dio as one of the defining forces of 1980s heavy metal.

Leading the charge is the explosive opener “We Rock” an instant metal anthem built on thunderous drums and blazing guitar work. The epic title track “The Last in Line” remains one of the band most iconic songs, rising from a haunting intro into a powerful, dramatic chorus that perfectly shows the legendary voice of Ronnie James Dio.

The album also shows the exceptional musicianship of drummer Vinny Appice, keyboardist Claude Schnell, bassist Jimmy Bain and guitarist Vivian Campbell whose tight playing gives the record its strong, polished sound.

While the epic closer “Egypt (The Chains Are On)” delves deeply into the mystical, fantasy-driven world that became a Dio trademark. Songs like “I Speed at Night” offer pure speed and energy.

Decades later “The Last in Line” still stands as a platinum-selling heavy metal classic, theatrical, powerful and packed with unforgettable riffs and melodies.
