Six years is a long time to wait for a new W.A.S.P. album.
After “Babylon” in 2009, W.A.S.P. finally returned on October 2nd, 2015 with “Golgotha” their 15th studio album and the longest gap between two studio albums in the band career.
And Blackie Lawless had clearly spent that time thinking.
The result is an album mixing W.A.S.P. heavy, melodic sound with deeply reflective songwriting. But which tracks deserve the spotlight?
Miss You
The emotional heavyweight.
“Miss You” wasn’t even written for “Golgotha”. Lawless originally wrote it during the “The Crimson Idol” era, where it was intended to portray Jonathan mourning at his brother grave.
Nearly 25 years later, it finally found its home.
The anguished vocals, emotional atmosphere and soaring guitar work from Doug Blair make it one of the album defining moments.
Golgotha
Seven and a half minutes of dark, brooding W.A.S.P.
The title track closes the album with an epic atmosphere and reflects Lawless return to his Christian faith. The song is written from the perspective of the thief crucified next to Jesus Christ.
It’s a very different kind of W.A.S.P. song but the weight of it is undeniable.
Last Runaway
Want the classic W.A.S.P. feeling?
“Last Runaway” brings the melodic, catchy side of the band straight to the front. With its infectious vocal hook and hard-rocking pace, it’s one of the tracks most likely to have you reaching for the volume knob.
Six Years of Work
The long wait wasn’t exactly smooth.
Lawless spent years writing and reworking the material, while physical setbacks including shoulder reconstruction surgery and a broken leg further fractured the recording timeline.
And despite the album very personal direction, Lawless emphasized that “Golgotha” wasn’t simply a one-man studio project. Doug Blair and Mike Duda worked with him through collaborative rehearsals, reshaping the arrangements together.
The album also marked the final W.A.S.P. studio appearance of drummer Mike Dupke, who had been with the band for nine years.
The lineup was:
Blackie Lawless – Vocals, guitars, keyboards, producer
Doug Blair – Lead guitars, backing vocals
Mike Duda – Bass
Mike Dupke – Drums
From “Scream” to “Golgotha” the album has plenty more to choose from.
But now the question is yours:
Which track from “Golgotha” is the one you keep coming back to?
