On May 12, 1992, Testament released their fifth studio album, “The Ritual”. It was their final studio album with drummer Louie Clemente and guitarist Alex Skolnick until the latter rejoined the band in 2005. Tony Platt produced the album, which signalled the band’s transition to a more metal style.
“The Ritual” was recorded throughout the course of 1991 and early 1992, with six to seven months spent composing and six weeks recording, making it Testament’s longest album to date in comparison to most of their prior releases. Given their time off from touring after finishing the promotional tour for “Souls of Black” in the spring of 1991, this was Testament’s first studio album that did not come out a year after their previous one.
Testament experimented with a calmer, more melodic approach on “The Ritual” while remaining true to their thrash roots. Certain tracks on the album, such as the title track (the longest song they had recorded at the time) and “Return to Serenity” continue the band’s exploration of a technical and advanced style that they employed on “Practice What You Preach“ and “Souls of Black“.
