Overkill, an iconic American thrash metal ensemble, emerged from the depths of New Jersey’s music scene in 1980. Throughout their illustrious career, the band has weathered numerous lineup changes, yet persevered with unwavering dedication, boasting bassist D.D. Verni and lead vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth as the stalwart pillars of their sonic force.
Presently, the ensemble is fortified by the talents of Dave Linsk on lead guitar, Derek Tailer on rhythm guitar, and Jason Bittner on drums.
Regarded alongside Nuclear Assault and Anthrax—where one-time Overkill lead guitarist Dan Spitz found a temporary home—Overkill stands as a vanguard of East Coast thrash metal, often likened to the Motörhead of their genre.
Their distinctive sound, a fusion influenced by punk rock and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), captivates audiences worldwide. Symbolizing their gritty persona is their iconic mascot, “Chaly,” a skeletal bat with a skull-like visage, adorned with horns, bony wings. And piercing green eyes, a recurring presence across many of their album covers.
Thrashing Through Time
Overkill’s discography boasts an impressive array of musical offerings, including twenty studio albums, an album featuring cover songs, two EPs, a demo tape, and three electrifying live albums. Pioneers in their own right, they were among the first thrash metal outfits to secure a major label deal, aligning with Atlantic Records in 1986.
Riding the crest of thrash metal’s wave during the mid-to-late 1980s alongside iconic acts like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, as well as Exodus and Testament, Overkill ascended to prominence. Their second studio album and Atlantic debut, “Taking Over” (1987), marked their initial foray into mainstream success, peaking at number 191 on the Billboard 200.

The subsequent string of releases—namely “Under the Influence” (1988), “The Years of Decay” (1989), “Horrorscope” (1991), “I Hear Black” (1993), and “W.F.O.” (1994)—further solidified their standing, with the latter two breaking into the top ten on the Top Heatseekers chart.
Despite parting ways with Atlantic in 1995, Overkill maintained their underground momentum, carving a niche for themselves, particularly in Europe and Japan. The dawn of the 2010s heralded a resurgence of their popularity in the United States. As evidenced by the chart success of three studio albums: “The Electric Age” (2012), “White Devil Armory” (2014), and “The Grinding Wheel” (2017), all gracing the top 100.
With over 16 million records sold worldwide and an estimated 625,000 records moved in the U.S. since the inception of the SoundScan era, Overkill’s indomitable spirit and sonic prowess continue to reverberate through the annals of thrash metal history.
