Released on September 24th, 2001, through AFM Records, Edguy’s “Mandrake” is one of those power metal albums that still feels built for a loud listen. Melodic, energetic, theatrical and packed with huge hooks, it captures the band at a point where their classic European power metal sound was beginning to open up to something broader.
Tobias Sammet vocals are front and center, backed by the guitar work of Jens Ludwig and Dirk Sauer, while the rhythm section of Tobias “Eggi” Exxel and Felix Bohnke gives the album plenty of drive. The result is melodic power metal with strong heavy metal roots and a noticeable dose of 1980s hard rock attitude.
Edguy’s Mandrake: Key Tracks and Fan Favorites
And then there’s “Tears of a Mandrake”. If there is one song that immediately comes to mind when talking about this album, it’s the opening track. Catchy, dramatic and unmistakably Edguy, it remains the album definitive fan-favorite and an easy reason to put “Mandrake” back on.
But there’s plenty more to dig into.
“The Pharaoh” stretches beyond the 10-minute mark, bringing Eastern-sounding melodies, progressive arrangements and a massive atmosphere. It’s the track for anyone who enjoys their power metal with a little more adventure.
On the heavier side “Nailed to the Wheel” delivers an aggressive, fast-paced attack, while “Golden Dawn” brings blistering speed-metal energy, galloping riffs and high-pitched vocals.
One of the most interesting things about “Mandrake” is how it sits between different sides of Edguy. Some power metal purists see it as a slightly softer or more commercial step compared with “Theater of Salvation” but that shift also helped give the album its own identity. The catchy 1980s-inspired hard rock hooks sit comfortably beside the band epic and theatrical moments.
There was also plenty happening around Tobias Sammet at the time. He was working on the first Avantasia release “The Metal Opera” around the same period and some of that grand, symphonic and theatrical thinking found its way into “Mandrake”. You can hear the beginnings of that larger-scale vision throughout the album.
The Story Behind Mandrake
The album also has its lighter side. Edguy were never a band afraid of humor and the booklet contains the kind of jokes and playful liner notes that contrast nicely with the serious, epic character of the music.
The “Tears of a Mandrake” video also had its own story, with the band filming their outdoor scenes overnight in freezing conditions. Definitely not the glamorous side of being in a power metal video.
Musically, much of the album came directly from Sammet, who wrote all the lyrics and composed almost all of the music, with Jens Ludwig receiving co-writing credits on “All the Clowns” and “The Pharaoh”.
