There are albums that mark a new chapter. Then there are albums that feel like the band is proving something.
Released on September 12th, 2011 “A Dramatic Turn of Events” was a major turning point for Dream Theater. It was their eleventh studio album, but more importantly, it was the first without founding drummer Mike Portnoy and the first to feature Mike Mangini behind the kit.
That alone made the album impossible to ignore.
But “A Dramatic Turn of Events” wasn’t simply about a lineup change. Dream Theater came out swinging with intricate arrangements, huge melodies, crushing riffs and enough instrumental fireworks to keep prog-metal fans busy for years.
And somewhere in the middle of all that is a 12-minute monster that many fans consider the album ultimate highlight: “Breaking All Illusions”.
“Breaking All Illusions”
If you ask fans to name the standout track from “A Dramatic Turn of Events” this one is going to come up again and again.
“Breaking All Illusions” has everything Dream Theater fans love shifting sections, emotional melodies, heavy passages, soaring guitar work and that unmistakable feeling that the song could keep going for another ten minutes and nobody would complain.
John Petrucci delivers some fantastic melodic guitar work, while the arrangement constantly moves between atmosphere and full-on progressive metal power.
It isn’t just technically impressive. It has emotion.
And that’s what makes it such a strong contender for the album best track.
“On the Backs of Angels”
The album opens with “On the Backs of Angels” and Dream Theater immediately make it clear that this isn’t going to be a quiet transition into a new era.
The song combines heavy riffs, melodic sections and Jordan Rudess unmistakable keyboard work into a classic Dream Theater formula.
It also became a particularly important song in the band history, earning Dream Theater their first Grammy nomination in 2012 for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.
Not a bad way to introduce a new drummer.
“Bridges in the Sky”
At more than 11 minutes “Bridges in the Sky” gives the band plenty of room to stretch out.
It’s heavy, atmospheric and packed with dramatic changes, moving from quieter passages into huge progressive-metal sections.
The track also shows why Dream Theater have always been able to make complicated music feel like an adventure rather than a technical exercise.
Turn it up. This one needs volume.
“Outcry”
“Outcry” is one of the album more rhythmically demanding tracks, with Petrucci and Rudess constantly trading musical blows.
The guitar and keyboard interplay is a big part of its appeal, while Mangini gets plenty of opportunity to show what he could bring to the band.
It’s complex, aggressive and unmistakably Dream Theater.
“Lost Not Forgotten”
“Lost Not Forgotten” wastes little time getting heavy.
The dramatic piano introduction quickly gives way to aggressive riffing, fast-paced sections and the kind of instrumental precision that prog-metal fans expect from Dream Theater.
It’s one of those tracks where every musician seems determined to prove they weren’t brought into the studio to play it safe.
The Mike Mangini Era Begins
Beyond the songs themselves “A Dramatic Turn of Events” represents a huge moment in Dream Theater history.
Mike Mangini made his studio debut with the band after Mike Portnoy departure in 2010. Because Mangini joined after much of the writing process had already been completed, Petrucci and Rudess had programmed initial drum parts for the writing sessions. Mangini then learned the material and recorded the parts, adding his own performance to the finished album.
It was a difficult transition for a band with such a long history but the album proved Dream Theater weren’t finished evolving.
Far from it.
A Title With More Behind It
Despite what many fans assumed “A Dramatic Turn of Events” wasn’t simply a reference to Portnoy leaving the band.
Petrucci explained that the title was inspired by dramatic political and historical events around the world, including uprisings such as the Arab Spring.
That makes the title even more fitting in retrospect. The album itself arrived during one of the most dramatic changes in Dream Theater history.
The Artwork Controversy
The album Hugh Syme artwork also attracted attention for another reason.
Fans noticed that the image of a child walking a tightrope while holding planet-like balloons closely resembled stock artwork that had previously appeared on Circus Maximus’s 2005 album The 1st Chapter.
For an album already surrounded by controversy and change, the artwork discussion added another unexpected chapter.
The Songs That Made the Album
From the opening power of “On the Backs of Angels” to the epic scale of “Breaking All Illusions”, “A Dramatic Turn of Events” showed that Dream Theater could enter a new era without losing what made them special.
And that’s probably why the album continues to spark debate among fans.
