Released on September 29th, 2008, is the third studio album by Swedish death metal supergroup Bloodbath.
The novelty of Bloodbath could have easily worn off. What began as a fun tribute to old-school death metal had evolved into a serious, uncompromising beast. “The Fathomless Mastery” captures the band at a fascinating musical intersection. It retains the raw, buzzsaw Stockholm rumblings of their roots while injecting a cold, surgical Floridian death metal technicality heavily inspired by Morbid Angel.
The primary talking point of this record is the triumphant studio return of vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt. Hot off tracking Opeth progressive masterpiece “Watershed”, Åkerfeldt treats this album like a massive vocal purging. Completely isolated from songwriting duties. He delivers what is widely considered one of the most powerful, deep and utterly demonic guttural performances committed to tape.
Musically, the album benefits immensely from the introduction of new lead guitarist Per Eriksson. Rather than wallowing in a pure nostalgia trip. Eriksson songwriting injects tighter arrangements, faster pacing and a dynamic variety of grooves.
Standout cuts like “Mock the Cross” rely on massive, doom-laden chord progressions that drip with atmospheric dread, while “Hades Rising” balances blistering blast beats with a haunting, melodic finale.

The Final Stand of the Åkerfeldt Era
“The Fathomless Mastery” marks a major historical milestone as the final Bloodbath studio album to feature Mikael Åkerfeldt on lead vocals. He officially stepped away from the band a few years later in 2012, stating that he no longer had the creative desire to perform pure death metal gutturals. Making this record his grand studio swan song.
The “Watershed” Overlap
The tracking of the album was a frantic logistical juggling act. The lineup essentially split right down the middle between two of Sweden biggest progressive metal acts. Half Opeth (Mikael Åkerfeldt and drummer Martin “Axe” Axenrot) and half Katatonia (guitarist Anders Nyström and bassist Jonas Renkse).
The “Where the Slime Lives” Homage
The structural composition of the fan-favorite track “Mock the Cross” written as a direct, loving homage to American death metal legends Morbid Angel. The song slow, sludgy and churning rhythmic bounce intentionally mirrors the iconic groove of Morbid Angel 1995 track “Where the Slime Lives”.
Per Eriksson Trial by Fire
Stepping into the band to replace founding guitarist and legendary studio mastermind Dan Swanö was considered a massive gamble by fans. However, new guitarist Per Eriksson completely silenced critics by writing the music for the majority of the album most popular tracks. Including “At the Behest of Their Death” and “Drink from the Cup of Heresy”.
