Thor. Ragnarök. Jörmungandr. And enough riffs to make Valhalla shake.
Released in September 2008 Twilight of the Thunder God was the album that pushed Amon Amarth into another league.
The band already had a loyal following, but this album was different. The production was huge, the riffs were massive, the melodies were sharper and the songs were built for both headbanging and screaming along at the top of your lungs.
And then there was “Twilight of the Thunder God”.
The title track quickly became one of Amon Amarth biggest anthems, telling the story of Thor final battle against the world serpent Jörmungandr during Ragnarök. It also features a blistering guest guitar solo from Roope Latvala of Children of Bodom.
But is it really the best track on the album?
That’s where things get interesting.
“Twilight of the Thunder God”
Let’s start with the obvious one.
That opening riff hits like a Viking longship crashing through a wall.
“Twilight of the Thunder God” is arguably Amon Amarth most recognizable anthem, combining crushing melodic death metal riffs with Johan Hegg unmistakable vocals and a huge, memorable chorus.
The guest solo from Roope Latvala adds another layer of fire to an already furious track.
It’s the kind of song that doesn’t need an introduction when it comes on live.
You hear that riff. You know what’s coming.
“Guardians of Asgaard”
If “Twilight of the Thunder God” is the epic “Guardians of Asgaard” is the party.
The song is built around an infectious mid-tempo chugging riff and features guest vocals from the late Lars-Göran Petrov of Entombed.
It’s heavy, catchy and practically designed for a crowd to shout along with.
Some songs are made for headphones.
This one was made for thousands of metalheads screaming together.
“Embrace of the Endless Ocean”
Here’s where the album gets darker.
“Embrace of the Endless Ocean” tells the tragic story of a freed slave dreaming of returning home, only to die in a violent storm at sea just as his homeland comes into view.
It’s one of the album most melancholic songs, with melodic guitar work that gives the story an emotional weight that goes beyond the usual Viking-warrior imagery.
Amon Amarth can make you want to raise a drinking horn but they can also break your heart.
This is one of those songs.
“Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags”
Loki is coming.
“Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags” describes Loki “Lopt, the Treacherous” leading an army of the dead toward Midgard.
Musically, it’s fast, aggressive and relentless.
The song feels almost cinematic, matching the apocalyptic story with a furious pace and plenty of melodic death-metal firepower.

“Free Will Sacrifice”
The opening track wastes no time setting the mood.
“Free Will Sacrifice” comes in with a heavy marching rhythm, huge production and a driving groove that immediately establishes what Twilight of the Thunder God is going to sound like.
It’s not just an introduction.
It’s a declaration.
The Guest Stars of Ragnarök
One of the fun things about Twilight of the Thunder God is how many familiar metal names appear throughout the record.
Roope Latvala contributes the guitar solo on the title track. Lars-Göran Petrov joins Amon Amarth on “Guardians of Asgaard” while Finnish cello-metal giants Apocalyptica bring their distinctive sound to “Live for the Kill”.
Three different guests. Three very different contributions.
And somehow, they all fit.
The Album That Changed Everything
Released through Metal Blade Records in 2008 Twilight of the Thunder God became a major commercial breakthrough for Amon Amarth.
It reached No. 10 on the Swedish album chart and No. 50 on the US Billboard 200.
The album also received an unusual promotional tie-in: an exclusive eight-page Twilight of the Thunder God comic was created and published in metal magazines across Europe.
Even the title track’s video shoot became a story of its own.
The band filmed the video in Jomsborg, Poland, where a massive real-life storm hit during production, creating some seriously brutal conditions.
Apparently, even the weather wanted to join Ragnarök.
From Tolkien to Thor
One detail that often surprises people has nothing to do with the album itself.
The band’s name, Amon Amarth, comes from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. In Sindarin Elvish, it means “Mountain of Doom.”
Despite the Tolkien connection, the band’s music has remained firmly rooted in Norse mythology and Viking history.
And Twilight of the Thunder God might be one of the clearest examples of that identity.
So, What’s the Best Track?
That’s the real question.
The title track is the massive anthem. “Guardians of Asgaard” is impossible not to shout along with. “Embrace of the Endless Ocean” brings the emotion, while “Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags” delivers the speed and aggression.
And that’s before getting into the rest of the album.
