History:

“Holy Diver” marks the debut solo album by Ronnie James Dio released on May 25, 1983. After successful stints with Rainbow and Black Sabbath, Dio embarked on a solo career bringing his unparalleled vocal prowess and lyrical themes to the forefront. His work with these bands laid the groundwork for what would become a heavy metal milestone, blending power, fantasy and theatricality in a way that only Dio could. The album was a critical and commercial success, cementing his reputation as one of metal finest voices.

The album cover, created by Randy Berrett, is one of the most memorable in heavy metal. It depicts a monstrous figure (later named “Murray”) casting a chained priest into stormy waters. The image provoked controversy but also became iconic for the way it embodied Dio blend of dark, heroic imagery. The artwork mythological feel blends in perfectly with the epic tale of the song and Dio’s recurring themes of good vs evil.
