Album Ranking: Dream Theater

Few bands in progressive metal have ever assembled as ambitious and as hotly debated a catalog as Dream Theater. Each age has its own faithful champions: the unfiltered fury of “When Dream and Day Unite” the cinematic narrative of “Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory” and the contemporary might of “Parasomnia”. Some fans love the technical fireworks, others connect more with the emotional melodies, dark concepts or heavier direction the band explored through the years.

Albums like “Images and Words” and “Awake” helped define progressive metal in the ‘90s, while releases such as “Train of Thought” and “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” took the band into heavier and darker territory. Then there are the divisive records like “Falling into Infinity” and “The Astonishing” albums that divide the fanbase but still have passionate supporters who love them for their experimental side.

One of the reasons it’s impossible to rank Dream Theater albums is because they all feel so different. One day you may want the complex storytelling of “Scenes from a Memory” and the next you may blast the crushing riffs of “A View from the Top of the World”. “Distance Over Time” and “Parasomnia” newer releases prove that the band still has the ability to surprise longtime listeners, decades into their career.

Now it’s your turn to select. Which album deserves to be no.1? Are “Images and Words” still prohibited? “Octavarium” is it their greatest masterpiece? Or should a newer record be given more regard by fans?

Vote in the poll below and tell us how you rank in the comments. Metalheads never agree on Dream Theater and that’s what makes these discussions so much fun. 🤘
