Halloween and heavy metal belong together. Dark stories, creepy vocals, evil sounding riffs, witches, vampires, demons and things that go bump in the night. Metal has always had plenty of material for October 31st.
Some bands have written songs about Halloween, while others take us into haunted houses, dark rituals, nightmares and supernatural stories. And to be honest a Halloween party without some King Diamond, Type O Negative or Black Sabbath just doesn’t feel right.
Instead of putting everything into one big playlist, we take a trip through different metal genres. Whether you want classic heavy metal, gothic darkness, slow doom riffs or extreme metal, there’s something here for your Halloween night.
1. Classic Heavy Metal & Horror Anthems
Let’s start with the songs that belong on almost every metalhead Halloween playlist. These tracks bring horror stories, monsters, nightmares and the kind of riffs that sound even better when the lights go out.
- King Diamond – “Halloween”
One of the most obvious choices for October 31st. Creepy falsetto vocals, great guitar work and a song that celebrates the strange feeling of Halloween night. - Helloween – “Halloween”
A fast heavy metal journey about the night of the dead and paranormal happenings. With its long storytelling structure, this one is perfect for the occasion. - Iron Maiden – “Fear of the Dark”
Not every horror story needs a monster. Sometimes it’s enough to walk alone at night and feel that something is following you. Iron Maiden capture that feeling perfectly. - Ozzy Osbourne – “Bark at the Moon”
Werewolves, darkness and one of Ozzy most recognizable heavy metal songs. What more could you want for Halloween? - Metallica – “Enter Sandman”
Childhood nightmares, night terrors and creepy shadows. This song reminds us that some of the scariest things come from our own imagination. - W.A.S.P. – “Scream Until You Like It”
A high energy 80s metal track that fits right into a spooky party playlist. - Rob Zombie – “Dragula”
Industrial metal, graveyard imagery and a dark party atmosphere. This one is made for turning up the volume. - Alice Cooper – “Welcome to My Nightmare”
A perfect Halloween addition from the master of shock rock. The song takes you straight into a strange and frightening nightmare. - Alice Cooper – “Feed My Frankenstein”
Monster stories, heavy guitars and a fun horror party atmosphere. This one belongs on the playlist.
2. Gothic, Occult & Dark Metal
Now let’s make things darker. This is where we get witches, vampires, black candles, mysterious stories and music that sounds like the soundtrack to a horror movie.
- Mercyful Fate – “Come to the Sabbath”
King Diamond’s voice and occult storytelling make this a perfect choice for anyone who likes their metal on the darker side. - Cradle of Filth – “Her Ghost in the Fog”
Orchestral, chilling and full of gothic horror atmosphere. This track feels like a journey through a haunted Victorian world. - Icarus Witch – “Black Candles”
A gloomy, catchy traditional heavy metal track built around occult themes and the image of burning black candles in the night.

Type O Negative: Halloween in Three Different Shades
You can’t make a Halloween metal playlist without Type O Negative. Peter Steele and the band had a special way of mixing dark humor, gothic atmosphere and heavy riffs. And they have more than one song that belongs on this list.
- “Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)” from “Bloody Kisses” (1993)
The seasonal favorite. Black lipstick, black hair, vampires, Halloween references and that unmistakable Type O Negative sound. It’s practically made for October nights. - “All Hallows Eve” from “World Coming Down” (1999)
A darker, atmospheric track filled with Halloween imagery, including grinning jack-o’-lanterns and spiderwebs. A perfect choice when the night gets quieter. - “Halloween in Heaven” from “Dead Again” (2007)
A strange and heavy Halloween celebration imagining an afterlife where departed rock and metal icons enjoy an eternal party.
3. Doom & Atmospheric Metal
Not every Halloween song needs speed and aggression. Sometimes the creepiest music is the kind that moves slowly, fills the room with heavy riffs and makes you feel like something terrible is about to happen.
- Black Sabbath – “Black Sabbath”
The song that helped create the dark side of heavy metal. Rain, bells, slow and heavy riffs and a terrifying atmosphere. Even decades later, it still sounds like the beginning of a horror movie.
4. Thrash, Death & Extreme Metal
If you prefer your Halloween with more aggression, blood, demons and dark stories, this section is for you. Forget the friendly pumpkins. It’s time for something heavier.
- Slayer – “Postmortem”
Dark, aggressive thrash metal with an unsettling atmosphere. A great choice for anyone who wants something heavier than the usual Halloween soundtrack. - Slayer – “Black Magic”
Sinister riffs and occult themes make this another perfect Slayer addition. - Venom – “Countess Bathory”
Inspired by the infamous Blood Countess, this track brings historical horror into early black/thrash metal. - Possessed – “The Exorcist”
Demonic possession, frantic riffs and extreme vocals. If you’re looking for something that sounds like a horror movie turning into a nightmare, this is it.
Turn Up the Volume. Halloween Is Here!
There you have it. From King Diamond’s “Halloween” and Helloween’s epic metal storytelling to the dark world of Type O Negative, the horror of Venom and the evil atmosphere of Black Sabbath, heavy metal has plenty of songs for October 31st.
And the best part? You don’t need to wait for Halloween to enjoy them.

Happy Halloween, metalheads! Keep it loud, keep it spooky and never stop playing heavy metal! 🤘🎃
Halloween Bonus: Beyond Heavy Metal
Not everything on a Halloween playlist has to be strictly heavy metal. Some horror themed songs are simply too good to leave out.
- Misfits – “Halloween”
Horror punk at its best. With its spooky atmosphere and unmistakable Misfits sound. This is practically a Halloween anthem. - Alice Cooper – “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)”
Inspired by the world of Friday the 13th, this is another perfect addition for horror movie fans.
