Behind the Metal: 10 Things You Might Not Know About Kreator

Kreator are one of those bands that helped shape the sound of German thrash metal. Fast riffs, raw aggression and Mille Petrozza unmistakable voice have made them a force to be reckoned with for more than four decades.

But their story started long before they became one of Europe biggest thrash metal names. Here are 10 things about Kreator that might surprise even longtime fans.

1. They Started Out as Tormentor

Kreator wasn’t always Kreator. Back in their early days, the band went through several names, including Tyrant and Metal Militia. They were also known as Tormentor before settling on the name that would become famous across the metal world.

2. KISS Helped Inspire Mille Petrozza

Even thrash metal legends have their own musical heroes. For Mille Petrozza, seeing KISS perform live as a young teenager helped spark the desire to start a band and make music himself. Not a bad place to find inspiration!

3. Mille Was Still a Teenager When Kreator Recorded Their First Albums

Kreator early years were all about speed, aggression and getting their music out there. Mille and the original lineup recorded their first three albums while he was still a teenager. That’s a pretty wild start for a band that would go on to influence generations of thrash metal fans.

4. Endless Pain Took Only 10 Days to Record

Released in 1985, Kreator debut album “Endless Pain”, was recorded in just 10 days at Musiclab Studios in Berlin. The result was raw, fast and full of the kind of aggression that helped define early German thrash metal. No months spent polishing every little detail here!

5. They Had Played Only Five Shows Before Their Debut

Here’s another detail that makes the story of “Endless Pain” even more interesting. According to the supplied account, Kreator had played only five live shows before entering the studio to record their debut. They were still a young local band, but they were already making their move.

6. They’re Part of Germany Thrash Metal Big Four

When talking about the German thrash metal scene, four names always come up: Kreator, Sodom, Destruction and Tankard. Together, they’re known as the Teutonic Big Four, often compared to the American thrash metal giants. If you love thrash, you know these bands helped put Germany firmly on the metal map.

7. Ventor Left the Band and Came Back

Jürgen “Ventor” Reil is one of the founding members of Kreator, but his time in the band hasn’t been without a break. He left in 1994 and returned in 1996. Alongside Mille Petrozza, he remains the other original member in the lineup. Some partnerships in metal are hard to break.

8. Kreator Didn’t Stick to Thrash All the Time

Kreator career wasn’t just about playing faster and heavier. On “Renewal“, released in 1992, they experimented with industrial influences and a different sound. It wasn’t the direction every fan expected, but Kreator weren’t interested in standing still. They explored new territory before returning to the thrash sound that made them famous.

9. Mille Petrozza Took His Story Beyond Music

Mille Petrozza has also shared his story away from the stage. He co-wrote the autobiography “Your Heaven, My Hell“, accompanied by the documentary film “Hate & Hope“. For fans who want to know more about the person behind Kreator music, these projects offer another way to explore his world.

10. Four Decades Later, Kreator Are Still Going Strong

Many bands slow down after decades on the road. Kreator have continued releasing music, playing live and building on their legacy. Their discography includes major records from different stages of their career, with “Krushers of the World“ among their more recent releases. From their early days as Tormentor to their place among thrash metal most respected names, Kreator have never been a band that simply faded away.
