Released on June 12th, 1995, “Draconian Times” is the fifth studio album by Paradise Lost and for many fans, this is where everything came together. The band had already built their name by mixing doom metal heaviness with dark gothic atmosphere, but this album took that formula much further.
Produced by Simon Efemey, “Draconian Times” finds that sweet spot between crushing riffs, melancholic melodies and huge emotional weight. It is often called the band masterpiece and it’s easy to understand why. Even after all these years, it still sounds like a record that knows exactly what it wants to be.

The album cover, designed by Holly Warburton, fits the music perfectly. It’s surreal, haunting and filled with mystical, religious and mythological imagery. The painterly style adds to the gothic feeling of the record, making the artwork feel like part of the album rather than simply something printed on the front.
Notable Tracks
“Enchantment” opens the album in brooding fashion, building the atmosphere with dark riffs and emotional intensity. It’s the kind of opener that immediately tells you you’re in for something special.
“The Last Time” is probably the track most people will point to first. The powerful chorus and gothic hooks make it one of the album’s biggest fan favorites and its success also showed that Paradise Lost could reach beyond the usual metal audience.
“Forever Failure” takes things into much darker territory, exploring despair and hopelessness while featuring chilling samples of Charles Manson.

“Draconian Times” is often called the “Black Album of gothic metal” and the comparison makes sense. Like that famous Metallica record, it represents both a creative peak and a major commercial breakthrough.

- “Draconian Times” peaked at #16 on the UK Albums Chart, one of the highest positions achieved by a gothic metal record at the time.
- “The Last Time” became a charting single in the UK, something pretty unusual for a gothic/doom metal band in the mid-90s.
- In 2011, Paradise Lost performed “Draconian Times” in full on tour and later released the live album Draconian Times MMXI.
- “Another Desire” written during the “Draconian Times” sessions, didn’t make the album or its reissues but later appeared on the “Forever Failure” single.
