With so many amazing hard rock songs in the repertoire, it’s difficult to get the list down to the top four. But these four classic hard rock tunes have had a big influence on the genre:
Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water
“Smoke on the Water” peaked at number 434 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 2004 list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”. Total Guitar magazine ranked “Smoke on the Water” at number 4 on its list of the “Greatest Guitar Riffs Ever”. Q magazine ranked “Smoke on the Water” at number 12 on its list of the 100 greatest guitar tracks in March 2005.
Led Zeppelin – Whole Lotta Love
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song 75th out of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”. It was ranked third on Q list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks in March 2005. Rolling Stone ranked it 11th on a similar list. VH1 ranked it the third best hard rock song of all time in 2009. In 2014, BBC Radio 2 listeners chose “Whole Lotta Love” to be the greatest guitar riff of all time.
Steppenwolf – Born To Be Wild
“Born to Be Wild” was the band’s third song from their first album Steppenwolf in 1968, and it became their most successful hit. Ranking as the second-highest hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It didn’t reach the top of the charts until The Rascals’ “People Got to Be Free”. On the 2004 list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” Rolling Stone magazine placed “Born to Be Wild” at number 129. On the AFI “100 Years…100 Songs” list of the best music from American song in 2004 it also ranked 29th. It was named the 53rd greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1 in 2009.
Ozzy Osbourne – Crazy Train
The song top position on the UK singles chart in 1980 was No. 49 In 1981. The song reached its highest point in the United States at No. 9 on the Billboard Top Tracks list. No. 6 on the Billboard Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart. By September 2010, the master ringtone had sold 1,750,000 downloads and received a double platinum certification. A music video followed Tribute’s re-release.
These four songs, each of which has permanently shaped the hard rock genre. And continues to motivate new generations of rock fans, serve as a testament to the diversity and influence of the genre.
