  1. Hey what’s up, this is Justice and I have been a life long fan of Heavy Metal. At the time of me writing this I am 19 years old and I love Heavy Metal so much. I literally have over 2,000 songs on my Metal playlist but there are only two bands in my opinion that are even in the room for the discussion of the greatest Metal band of all time and that is Metallica and Iron Maiden. I have been listening to Metallica since I was 3 years old and I have been a life long fan of Metallica. I did not get into Iron Maiden until I was 14 years old or when I was in 8th grade, so Iron Maiden came a little later in my life. Over the years I have battles with myself over who I truly believe is the better band and so allow me to lay this one out a little bit.
So Metallica is my childhood band, make no mistake about it. However Iron Maiden was my mid to late teens band as I became an adult so honestly Metallica being the band I have listened to longer does not factor in that much despite the fact that I was named after the …And Justice For All album and my middle name Jaymes is after James Hetfeild obviously from Metallica. So yes I was named after Metallica in 2 parts of my name not even just one which would have been enough. Not to mention the fact that my birthday December 16th also happens to be Metallica Day in San Francisco granted but still that is cool that it could have been any other day but December 16th was the day they chose which like I said is my birthday and I was named after them. Despite all of that though, I’m not as biased as you would think because I will be fair to both. Yes this is my opinion at the end of the day but just hear me out and see what you think.
So Metallica in my opinion has the punchier, more energetic, heavier songwriting of the two and in my opinion they have dare I say the more classic songs than Iron Maiden does because Iron Maiden’s songs were either too long for me or sounded odd to me at first, while as with Metallica, I didn’t have those kinds of experiences that often where the song was too long or it sounded odd requiring me to listen to the song or album multiple times to understand what they were trying to do with the songs as it pertains to the listener, you know why did they write the song this way? I didn’t have to do that much work when it came to Metallica while as Iron Maiden I kinda did. That is why I say Metallica is the more classic band of the two, more classic doesn’t mean better. I just think that Metallica’s songs are more recognizable than even Iron Maiden’s most popular songs.
Enough about Metallica though, let’s move on to Maiden and what they are better at. Iron Maiden are the more intelligent songwriters. There songs might not be as memorable or catchy right? like maybe you will have to do a little bit of work to get used to their music but once you do it becomes very clear that Iron Maiden is the masterpiece band. I have never seen a band write so many epic songs that are at least 7 minutes long like Iron Maiden has. Not that their short songs aren’t great but my goodness, the fact that they are able to write masterpiece after masterpiece, epic after epic is to me a testament to their songwriting expertise. Iron Maiden are experts at songwriting, every last member in that band is a musical genius. So yeah, I think the band who has the ability to write masterpiece after masterpiece should be considered the more intelligent songwriters than even the great Metallica. Notice how I didn’t say Iron Maiden was better once though, I just said that I think they are the more intelligent songwriters when you look at all the epics and masterpieces they have written that took lots of creativity. Metallica are obviously the catchier more classic band of the two but Iron Maiden can do a little more in their songwriting than Metallica can. I think that is extremely fair.
Back to Metallica real quick. I think Metallica has the better riffs than Iron Maiden does. Iron Maiden is actually not one of my all time favorite Metal bands when It comes to riffs believe it or not. I love Iron Maiden’s riffs don’t get me wrong but when I think riffs, I think heavy, downpicking, low tuned sort of riffs, not necessarily catchy melodies. No when I think riffs, I’m thinking Pantera, Metallica, Helloween, Primal Fear, Megadeth, Dream Theater, Judas Priest riffs. I like heavier, lower tuned riffing and so Iron Maiden doesn’t fit that as much as other bands do obviously including Metallica who might just have the greatest riffs ever or at least some of the very best riffs we have ever heard. I will admit I think Metallica has the better riffs than Iron Maiden, I don’t think that is controversial. I think that is incredibly fair as well.
    Conclusion:
Overall I think both bands are Metal Gods and not that Judas Priest isn’t included in this discussion but I have them at a somewhat distant 3rd. Like I said the discussion of who the greatest Metal band ever are these two bands, Metallica and Iron Maiden. I think Iron Maiden is the more consistent band of the two with more great songs and albums. Metallica however is the heavier, more fun energetic band to listen too and I also think Metallica had a better prime than Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden has never written a record as good as Master of Puppets and …And Justice For All. Even Metallica’s later stuff too as great like Death Magnetic and Hardwired to Self Destruct those are two all time great Metal albums right there with great energy and melody. To be fair, without Iron Maiden there is no Metallica and like I said Iron Maiden has written more great songs and albums but Metallica is more memorable, heavier and had the better prime than Maiden did in my view. Metallica also invented a genre while as Iron Maiden was just a part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and then I would say both bands are just about equal live, both are excellent live. So I’ll pick Metallica strictly because of their numbers because numbers is the only thing that they have that can bring me to put them over Iron Maiden but for the reasons listed above, I think they are tide really.
So Metallica is #1 and Iron Maiden is #2 all time for me.
